'''Revolupedia'''{{Efn|Self-described as '''the people's encyclopedia'''.}} was a [[Communism|communist]] [[MediaWiki]] site which was inspired by [[Leftypedia]]. Revolupedia existed between 22 June 2024 to 22 February 2026. It was initially founded as a part of the Red Spectre organization but would become independent in 2025, free to determine its own ideological line on the basis of its own community.

Revolupedia, in contrast to Leftypedia, was strongly [[Sectarianism|sectarian]]. Its ideological line changed several times, from the RS' iteration of "[[anti-revisionism]]" to [[Hoxhaism|"Hoxhaism"]] and then [[Maoism]]. After its founder abandoned Maoism in 2026, a split in the editorship resulted in the site being destroyed.
==Comparison with Leftypedia==
Revolupedia was inspired by Leftypedia, but took on a very different direction. Instead of Leftypedia's position of [[left-unity]], Revolupedia was very sectarian and rarely employed neutral language, regarding most tendencies (including eventually Hoxhaism itself) as [[Revisionism|"revisionist"]] or [[Rightism|"rightist"]]. Instead of generating original discourse and ideological discussion, it actively restricted the editor team to staunch Hoxhaists or, eventually, [[Gonzalo Thought|Gonzaloists]], banning those who violated this line for "ideological deviations". Revolupedia relied heavily on direct quotations from the "[[classics of Marxism]]",{{Efn|By the end of the site's existence, it regarded "Marx, Engels, Lenin, Stalin, Mao, and Gonzalo" as the classical theorists.<ref>[https://web.archive.org/web/20260202023116/https://revolupedia.net/wiki/index.php?title=Classics_of_Marxism "Classics of Marxism"]. ''Revolupedia''. If the thing is useless, so is the labor contained in it; the labor does not count as labor, and therefore creates no value” (Marx). The dominant feature of capitalist society is the production of goods as commodities. “The wealth of those societies in which the capitalist mode of production prevails presents itself as an immense accumulation of commodities, its unit being a single commodity” (Marx). “In the value form of the product (i.e., commodity), as in a folded bud lies the whole form of capitalist production, the antagonism between capital and wage-labor, the industrial reserve army and crises” (Engels).

The monetary expression of the value, or the price, of labor-power, but which appears in the form of the “price of labor.” Wages (time-wages, piecework-wages, bonuses, etc.) seem to be payment for the entire labor of the worker; hence, capitalist exploitation, i.e., the appropriation of surplus value, is concealed. “The value of labor-power is determined, as in the case of every other commodity, by the labor-time necessary for its production, and, consequently also the reproduction of this special article… in other words, the value of labor-power is the value of the means of subsistence necessary for the maintenance of the laborer” (Marx). Wages “are not a share of the worker in the commodities produced by himself. Wages are that part of already existing commodities with which the capitalist buys a certain amount of productive labor-power” (Marx). Unlike other commodities, the determination of the value of labor-power includes an historical or social element. In every country it is “determined by a traditional standard of life. It is not mere physical life, but it is the satisfaction of certain wants springing from social conditions in which people are placed and reared” (Marx). The tendency in capitalism is always towards the reduction of the standard of living of the workers to an extremely low level.

== Arguing and Propagandising ==

=== Basic Introduction ===

As communists and leftists, you will need to do a lot of debating and arguing in order to fully convince someone to abandon their reactionary views and join the [[worker's movement]].

We, leftists, particularly in the west, are facing extreme opposition from all sides. Communists face opposition from [[social democrats]] and [[neoliberals]], as well as from other leftist sects that they are in disagreement with. In this page, I will be explaining why Leftists face such opposition, how to counteract it, and some criticisms of other sects of the wider Left. <!-- I would like to take this opportunity to point out that I am a follower of Marxism-Leninism and Mao Zedong Thought, as well as the Juche Idea. In English that means I like Marx, Engels, Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Kim Il-Sung and other associated individuals and organisations (e.g. Ho Chi Minh, Enver Hoxha), though I am not without criticism of each. I read their theory, I practice it as best I can, etc, etc. I hope that even if you are ''not'' a Leninist, you can find this article useful. -->

===== Context =====

The capitalist class and its allies are hostile to any form of working-class movement. In the United States, the Red Scare and McCarthyism have dealt a serious blow against working-class politics and organising, a blow that will take serious efforts to counteract. Our enemy is crafty, they have learned from the [[October Revolution]] in [[Russia]]. They are aware of the danger it posed to them, and are desperate not to repeat their errors. Fortunately <!-- as I write this on the 30th of October 2020, 103 years since the Great October Revolution,--> the capitalist class, in all its arrogance, is growing lazy and incompetent. We have another chance, and it starts with how we talk to people.

Capitalism might seem like a powerful enemy, but better men and women have come before us and beaten them. [[Ursula K. Le Guin]] put it best:

<blockquote>We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art, and very often in our art, the art of words.</blockquote>

She is right. It is possible to resist and overthrow the capitalist class. How we do that will not be discussed here. <!-- Don't let your doomer inklings take hold - we ''can'' win. This is the very first truth you must embrace - you must wholeheartedly believe that we, the working people, '''''can, must, and will defeat the international bourgeoisie and forces of capitalism and unite the human race. We will suffer setbacks, we will have to make incredible sacrifice, and the complete transformation of humanity will take an era, an eon; an entire period of human history that will outlive us all, but in the end, we will win.''''' If you do not embrace this truth with all your being, then, turn back. The revolutionary life is not for you.-->

Now, to begin: knowing yourself.

=== Ideological and practical education ===

In order to properly engage and convince the people, you must have views you have thoroughly researched and hold with firm conviction to be true. How do we know what views are correct? [[Mao Zedong]] says it well:

<blockquote>They [correct ideas] come from social practice, and from it alone... Once the correct ideas characteristic of the advanced class are grasped by the masses, these ideas turn into a material force which changes society and changes the world... Man’s knowledge makes another leap through the test of practice. This leap is more important than the previous one. For it is this leap alone that can prove the correctness or incorrectness of the first leap in cognition, i.e., of the ideas, theories, policies, plans or measures formulated in the course of reflecting the objective external world. There is no other way of testing truth. Furthermore, the one and only purpose of the proletariat in knowing the world is to change it. Often, correct knowledge can be arrived at only after many repetitions of the process leading from matter to consciousness and then back to matter, that is, leading from practice to knowledge and then back to practice. Such is the Marxist theory of knowledge, the dialectical materialist theory of knowledge. Among our comrades there are many who do not yet understand this theory of knowledge. When asked the sources of their ideas, opinions, policies, methods, plans and conclusions, eloquent speeches and long articles they consider the questions strange and cannot answer it. Nor do they comprehend that matter, can be transformed into consciousness and consciousness into matter, although such leaps are phenomena of everyday life. It is therefore necessary to educate our comrades in the dialectical materialist theory of knowledge, so that they can orientate their thinking correctly, become good at investigation and study and at summing up experience, overcome difficulties, commit fewer mistakes, do their work better, and struggle hard so as to build China into a great and powerful socialist country and help the broad masses of the oppressed and exploited throughout the world in fulfilment of our great internationalist duty.<ref>Mao Zedong, (1963) "Where do correct ideas come from?", Marxists.org. [https://www.marxists.org/reference/archive/mao/selected-works/volume-9/mswv9_01.htm Link]</ref></blockquote>

In order to argue properly and avoid embarrassing yourself, you will need to make sure you have conducted extensive research on your ideological choosing, as well as taken a look into how your opponents' minds work. Find out the logic of neoliberalism and find a way to counter it. Finding counters to common talking points will go a long way. Despite this, you must avoid assuming you know another person's beliefs. This is a crucial point, as we will go into later.

One of the best ways to make yourself ideologically stable and correct is to read theory and engage in [[praxis]], or practical action. It is a tired point, but you actually do need to do these things. It is only by actually organising that you can find out what ideas are accurate and convincing.

There are countless leftist works on Marxists.org, you have no excuse for not reading them. Here's some recommended works for people trying to learn about Marxism–Leninism:

* ''The Principles of Communism'',<ref>Friedrich Engels, (1847) "The Principles of Communism", Marxists.org. [https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1847/11/prin-com.htm Link]</ref> By Friedrich Engels. A great, simple introduction to Communism, what Communists aim to achieve, and the Communist worldview. I mean, the book is in dot point format, for Marx's sake.
* ''The Communist Manifesto'',<ref>Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, (1848) "Manifesto of the Communist Party", Marxists.org. [https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/download/pdf/Manifesto.pdf Link]</ref> By Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. A more advanced and more in-depth look at the Communist worldview and what Communists must do.
* ''Imperialism, the Highest Stage of Capitalism'',<ref>Vladimir Lenin, (1916), "Imperialism, the Highest Stage of Capitalism", Marxists.org. [https://www.marxists.org/archive/lenin/works/1916/imp-hsc/ Link]</ref> This book is critical for understanding how Imperialism worked and works today. In over 100 years, very little has changed, and this book (plus a little research on your part) is great at unveiling the horrors of Capitalism and how Imperialism works. With a little digging on your part, you can make a very effective anti-imperialist appeal and break the illusion, to show the true brutality of Capitalism on he exploited parts of the world.
* ''On Protracted Warfare'',<ref>Mao Zedong, (1938) "On Protracted Warfare", Marxists.org. [https://www.marxists.org/reference/archive/mao/selected-works/volume-2/mswv2_09.htm Link]</ref> By Mao Zedong. This work is good at exploring the strategic revolutionary aims of Communists, and explore how exactly Communists aim to win an armed insurrection. While times and warfare has changed, strategy has not, and Mao's words are still relevant today. The most important takeaway from this work is that we can win.
* ''Marxism and the National Question'',<ref>Joseph Stalin, (1916) "Marxism and the National Question", Marxists.org. [https://www.marxists.org/reference/archive/stalin/works/1913/03.htm Link]</ref> by Joseph Stalin. A relatively easy-to-read essay by Stalin that explores what is Nationalism, where does it come from, and what is to be done about it, as well as other questions such as "What is a nation?". Great reading for anyone living in a Colonial nation such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand and America.
* ''The State and Revolution'',<ref>Vladimir Lenin, (1917) "The State and Revolution", Marxists.org. [https://www.marxists.org/archive/lenin/works/1917/staterev/ Link]</ref> by Vladimir Lenin. I absolutely cannot stress this enough, this is absolutely one of the most important works any Leftist should read. Deals with the nature of revolution and revolutionaries, how Bourgeois propaganda works and how it warps even the minds of the most ardent comrades, and is in general a great way of explaining exactly what revolution entails and the nature of the Bourgeoisie.

So, to start, you must be educated in order to begin educating other people. In truth, you never reach a point where you know all there is to know. You are always learning, always hearing new perspectives. The test comes in what perspectives you take on board, and which ones you disregard. As you learn more, read more and do more, you will get better at this.

== How to Argue ==

==== Knowing people ====

One of the first things you will have to learn is that everybody thinks they're right and that by default, most people see an attack on their opinion as an attack on themselves. That means that you're going to have to treat every single opinion you come across with respect, or at least you'll have to feign respect, regardless of that opinion, if you want to have a chance at convincing another person. It doesn't matter what you think of the other person's political opinions, you will have to tolerate them - and more than that, you will have to entertain the possibility of them being correct - if you want them to listen to you as well.

As Communists, we are usually on the backfoot, constantly having to defend ourselves, our ideas and our accomplishments. In order to turn the tide and make the masses question themselves instead of us, to get someone to listen to us, we first need to listen to them. We must play in time with the mood of the masses and whoever we might be talking to.

==== Arguing without making enemies ====

Let's say you have a friend or someone important in your life who you want to share the worker's cause with - but they're a Neoliberal who supports the Democratic Party. Or, in another scenario, you've met a new friend with opposing political views - say, they're a Trump supporter - but they're willing to listen to your perspective. How do you convince them and maintain your personal relationship?

Well, the fact that you have a personal relationship with them is already beneficial, it means they're a little bit more likely to listen to you. Here are some tips on how to radicalise a liberal who happens to be your friend:

===== You're not there for a fight =====

You aren't. You're not there to disseminate and dismiss everything they know and hold to be true. You can't convince someone to be a communist overnight, that's just not how it works. It's not what happened with you, is it? We, everyone reading this, became a Communist after some time, around a year or more of learning, questioning, asking, thinking and experiencing. Wether it was our bosses or landlords taking advantage of us, or it was ourselves noticing trends in the world around us. With this in mind, think long-term. A single conversation most likely isn't going to change their world. But what you can do is inject an idea, a perspective, a way of thinking or an argument that might go against their capitalist worldview, something for them to chew on and either attempt to refute (at which you'll have to provide a counter-argument) or accept and go one step closer towards Marxism.

* '''Don't get frustrated or talk over the top of the other person.''' In the passion of debate you might get frustrated or exacerbated, repeating a point that they should've understood by now, but something isn't clicking. If you get frustrated, however, this will only make things worse. You'll simply make yourself look foolish and irrationally angry, and the other person will take you less seriously. Keep calm, keep your composure. If you get frustrated or emotional, your argument will fail. Now, if the other person gets frustrated or emotional:
* '''Upwards Inflection to de-escalate conflict.''' An "Upwards Inflection", also known as upspeak, is a feature used in the English language where the last few words of a sentence are in a rising intonation, as if the speaker is asking a question. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqNhEzrWQpY Here is an example [external YouTube link<nowiki>]</nowiki>.] This can come off in a variety of ways, so make sure that when you use this it's always in a calm and respectful manner, always treating the opposite party as an equal, rather than a child being lectured.
* '''Slow down how you talk.''' You're not Ben Shapiro. He might be good at speaking fast enough so that his audience doesn't notice the logical fallacies in his arguments, but, more importantly than that, it's unconvincing. Slow down how you talk, make yourself as clear as possible. This is good for de-escalating tension as well, and a good way to enforce it is to force yourself to take a breath before each sentence.
* '''Learn to take a joke.''' With more conservative-minded people, they may occasionally crack a joke at your expense. Usually this comes in the form of "No food lol" or something related to authoritarianism, Venezuela, the DPRK or China and so on and so on. This is fine, and, if they do this and you take it in good jest, then, they will be more open and willing to listen to you, cracking a joke yourself is also a good way to de-escalate tension.

Here's an example of the points mentioned. In this [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_W4RSDv7zM video] Trevor Noah is interviewing Tomi Lauren, a political figure of the far-right. Notice how she is aggressive and almost attacking Noah, yet, he expertly uses the techniques above to defuse the situation and make his point - and notice how she is almost agreeing with him.

===== Question Them =====

Communists cannot be created artificially, they can only be made by will. A person must decide to be a Communist, not be pressured into becoming one halfheartedly.

* '''Steelman, not Strawman.''' "Strawmanning", or "Strawman Fallacy" is a logical fallacy in an argument wherein the arguer creates a fictional representation ("Strawman") of the opponent and argues against their arguments, rather than the actual opponent. This is an absolute no-no and you should never, ever do it. What you should do instead is something called "Steelmanning", which is attempting to understand the opponent's point of view and arguments as much as possible and represent them in good faith, with the best possible intentions. This will go a long way to securing trust between you and your opponent, and will help you create an effective argument to best radicalise your opponent. Instead of attacking what you think is their argument, attacking their actual argument and challenging their actual beliefs is the only way to change their mind. A good way of doing this is repeating your opponent's arguments back to them in your own words and allowing them to explain them to you. Do not advance until you get a confirmation. If you do this, it shows your opponent that you're listening to them and what they have to say, and they will, subsequently, listen to you. Don't use the words "So you're saying", though. That never works.
* '''Protracted People's Argument.''' Much like how Mao probed KMT lines for weaknesses, you should probe their arguments for weak points they can't completely back up or inconsistencies and logical fallacies. More often than not, people find themselves believing in doublethink or Cognitive Dissonance, holding two opposing viewpoints in the same value and upholding both as correct. More than Orwell's "War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery", real world examples could be "Obama deserved his Nobel Prize, even though he bombed hospitals". Probe for inconsistencies like that and force them to confront them, and present your solution to the new dilemma they face if they cannot adequately and confidently answer.
* '''Frame your disagreements as Questions.''' Disagreeing with someone is a hard blow to them, especially in politics. We as Communists find it horrific that there are some who unironically support Capitalism, or Fascist Dictators, or Kings and other tyrants. But, we need to frame our disagreements as Questions, such as:

"I don't think the Police are Racist"

"So, what do you think of this data that shows they are?"

* This way, you're not making it clear that you do disagree with the notion that the Police aren't Racist, you're instead questioning their belief and presenting yourself as a neutral party. It's very important to not be aggressive when doing this. You have to make sure that, from the tone of your voice to the words you choose, you are being as calm, rational, and nonpartisan as you can. This leads into the next point on going on the offensive.
'''New Democracy''' was the political theory developed by [[People's Republic of China|Chinese]] revolutionary [[Mao Zedong]]. It holds that a semi-[[Feudalism|feudal]] society like 20th century China which did not undergo a [[bourgeois revolution]] must create a temporary alliance with [[Progress|progressive]] and anti-feudal classes in which a "joint-dictatorship" is exercised to carry out the tasks of a democratic revolution. Under the hegemony of the [[proletariat]], power is also shared with the [[peasantry]], [[petite-bourgeoisie]], and progressive segments of the [[national bourgeoisie]]. After the success of New Democracy, a conventional [[dictatorship of the proletariat]] is developed.

==Background==
[[Vladimir Lenin]] spoke of the need for a "revolutionary dictatorship of the proletariat ''and peasantry''" as far back as from before the [[1905 Russian Revolution|1905 revolution]]. In his work ''The Two Tactics of Social Democracy in the Democratic Revolution'', Lenin said the following:<ref>Vladimir Lenin (1905).
<blockquote>And such a victory will be precisely a dictatorship, i.e., it must inevitably rely on military force, on the arming of the masses, on an insurrection, and not on institutions of one kind or another, established in a “lawful” or “peaceful” way. It can be only a dictatorship, for the realisation of the changes which are urgently and absolutely indispensable for the proletariat and the peasantry will call forth the desperate resistance of the landlords, of the big bourgeoisie and of tsarism. Without a dictatorship it is impossible to break down that resistance and to repel the counter-revolutionary attempts. '''But of course it will be a democratic, not a socialist dictatorship. It will not be able (without a series of intermediary stages of revolutionary development) to affect the foundations of capitalism.''' At best it may bring about a radical redistribution of landed property in favour of the peasantry, establish consistent and full democracy including the formation of a republic, eradicate all the oppressive features of Asiatic bondage, not only in village but also in factory life, lay the foundation for a thorough improvement in the position of the workers and for a rise in their standard of living, and—last but not least—carry the revolutionary conflagration into Europe. Such a victory will by no means as yet transform our bourgeois revolution into a socialist revolution; the democratic revolution will not directly overstep the bounds of bourgeois social and economic relationships; nevertheless, the significance of such a victory for the future development of Russia and of the whole world will be immense. Nothing will raise the revolutionary energy of the world proletariat so much, nothing will shorten the path leading to its complete victory to such an extent, as this decisive victory of the revolution that has now started in Russia. {{Emphasis}}</blockquote>
===Supposed socialism===
The government of Pol Pot can hardly be called a socialist, especially in practice. His ideology and actions appeared to be more so ethno-nationalist and primitivist, evidenced by his extreme xenophobia of ethnic minorities such as the Chinese, Vietnamese, Lao, and Cham,<ref>Helen Fein. Revolutionary and Antirevolutionary Genocides: A Comparison of State Murders in Democratic Kampuchea, 1975 to 1979, and in Indonesia, 1965 to 1966. ''Comparative Studies in Society and History'', Vol. 35, No. 4 (Oct. 1993), pp. 796–823</ref><ref>Department of Press and Information of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Democratic Kampuchea. Black Paper Facts and Evidences of the acts of Aggresion and Annexation of Vietnam against Kampuchea (September 1978) Pages 1 to 17</ref> on top of his de-industrialization and mass-murder of intellectuals, beyond what may be considered reasonable grounds, such as if those intellectuals had supported a counter-revolution to his supposed socialist government. Pol Pot considered the intelligentsia contaminated with Western knowledge, and thus enemies merely for this. In the end, it was a more authentic socialist state, Vietnam, that ended his murderous and reactionary regime and brought upon a more true course for socialism in the successor state of the People's Republic of Kampuchea. Pol Pot's ideology perhaps resembles fascism more than socialism, if anything, as he for instance believed in the importance of racial struggle<ref>{{cite book|title=Revolution and its Aftermath|editor=David Chandler & Ben Kiernan|location=New Haven|year=1983}}</ref> and “living space” more than things like class-based struggle and such.

===Living standards===
Living standards drastically decreased from 1975 onwards. In 1977, the average life expectancy of a Cambodian was around only 18 years old,<ref>https://web.archive.org/web/20200607215804/https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/SP.DYN.LE00.IN?locations=KH</ref> infant mortality rates had also greatly increased.<ref>https://web.archive.org/web/20200505163953/https://www.macrotrends.net/countries/KHM/cambodia/infant-mortality-rate</ref>

There was not even a semblance of food security, with malnourishment being an epidemic that the majority had to bear. Rice rations rarely (if ever) met the 570 gram requirement, instead often ranging from 250 to 500 grams depending on the province.<ref>https://web.archive.org/web/20200714234925/https://www.loc.gov/item/89600150/</ref> Compounding on the misery, foraging and tending to personal crops was prohibited.

Party officials and soldiers always managed to stay well-fed, justified by a doctrine of economic self-reliance. This characterized the Cambodian military with a unique separation from the proletariat, along with negligence of anybody but the higher-ups. There were alongside this also reports of the military exporting rice to China and stockpiling in case of a war with Vietnam.

==Foreign policy==
===Collaboration with the United States===
Pol Pot served more as a force against the socialist world, as he was backed by the CIA and China,<ref>Secretary of State Henry Kissinger discusses the Khmer Rouge regime with Thailand’s Foreign Minister Chatichai, November 26, 1975 Kissinger: “You should also tell the Cambodians that we will be friends with them. They are murderous thugs, but we won’t let that stand in our way. We are prepared to improve relations with them.”</ref><ref>Jackson, Karl D. Cambodia 1977: gone to Pot – ''Asian Survey'', 1978. p. 81</ref> which teamed up with the United States to oppose the Soviet Union, which had supported Vietnam – which Pol Pot was against. The United States further sponsored the creation and armament of the Coalition Government of Democratic Kampuchea, which included the Khmer Rouge, which itself officially renounced communism in 1981 following the Cambodian-Vietnamese War, turning toward support from the United States from then on.

==Ideology==
===Monarchism===
Pol Pot favored the reactionary monarchy and had good relations with them, and rather than seizing and developing the means of production, he had them destroyed as he deemed them to be of “the old ways.” He also pushed for de-urbanization of the country and effectively its ultimate de-industrialization. Religion was suppressed by excessive levels of force, and Pol Pot also pushed far too quickly to abolish money, despite the rest of the world not facilitating such a measure.<ref>''Final Solutions: Mass Killing and Genocide in the Twentieth Century'' Cornell University Press, 2004. {{ISBN|0-8014-3965-5}} [https://books.google.com/books?id=LQfeXVU_EvgC&pg=PA133&dq=khmer+rouge+abolish+private+property+emptied+cities&hl=en&ei=J54_TIKyKIL88Abch92ICw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=9&ved=0CFAQ6AEwCA#v=onepage&q&f=false p. 127] https://web.archive.org/web/20160504104107/https://books.google.com/books?id=LQfeXVU_EvgC&pg=PA133&dq=khmer+rouge+abolish+private+property+emptied+cities&hl=en&ei=J54_TIKyKIL88Abch92ICw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=9&ved=0CFAQ6AEwCA#v=onepage&q&f=false</ref> Children of those considered irredeemable were killed as well, to preempt any revenge, which was excessive as well.

===Primitivism===
People with glasses were targeted, since primarily only the intelligentsia could afford them, on top of needing them for intellectual work, however merely having glasses was not a death sentence. Generally the same applies for other factors, such as being educated or knowing another language.<ref>[https://archive.is/3lzXz Did the Khmer Rouge really kill everyone with glasses?]</ref>

Modern medicine was shunned as a type of western cultural imperialism and supremacy. Instead of effective modern medicine, the Khmer Rouge supplied traditional and mystical folk remedies thought to be superior or equivalent by their unaware esoterists. This predictably lead to mass suffering and an excess of easily preventable deaths.<ref>Bandeth Ros, Gillian Lê, Suzanne Fustukian, Barbara McPake. The commercialization of traditional medicine in modern Cambodia. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov</ref><ref>Anne Yvonne Guillou.
A return to traditional feudal village life was implemented. City dwellers were expelled and forced into the unfamiliar Cambodian jungle. The slum dwellers now being put into small wooden huts in what was an aborted attempt to emulate the Down to the Countyside Movement. Many city dwellers were unused to the conditions or couldn't adapt and simply died as a result, with plenty of others dying in the chaotic arduous march into rurality.

Factories were neglected, as there was no need for mass production in the new agriculture based economy. Facilities for military and agricultural production were the only sectors allotted manufacturing capabilities, as well as some simple craft production supplementing the agricultural base. The remaining work was done by masses forced into working the fields and construction of irrigation systems.

Sharp class contrasts accompanied the return to feudal village life. Army officers were known to kill and hold the former urbanites at gunpoint. The already-existing peasantry was held on a higher ideological pedestal, despite still being subordinate to the state in all matters.
'''Nazism''' (''German: Nationalsozialismus'') is a [[far-right]] and [[fascist]] [[ideology]] developed by [[Adolf Hitler]] and other members of the [[NSDAP]] which holds that "[[Aryan]]" Germans are the most superior race, while people such as [[Jews]], [[gay]]s, and Slavs are inferior. While Nazis in [[Nazi Germany]] allied with non-Aryans such as Italians and Japanese, this was merely for support and Nazis did not consider Italians and Japanese to be superior.{{Cn}}

[[Neo-Nazism]], a general term for revival groups of the Nazi ideology, is prevalent in both [[Europe]] and the [[United States]]. It abandons the idea of the Aryan German and replaces it with generic [[White supremacy]].

==Development and origins==
===German esotericism===
Nazi ideology and iconography owes a major debt to the anti-Semitic and nationalist esoteric movement which was common among German reactionaries since the 19th century, including among "proto-fascist" paramilitary groups such as the Freikorps. By the time the Nazis began employing the swastika as their symbol, the association in Europe between the swastika and esoteric reactionism had already become well-established; in Finland, for example, where the national military used the seemingly innocuous symbol in at least some form until the 21st century, it had in fact originated in 1918 with the Swedish fascist Eric von Rosen.<ref>{{cite web | last=Allen | first=Claudia | title=Finland's air force quietly drops swastika symbol | website=BBC News | date=1 Jul 2020 | url=https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-53249645 | access-date=18 Aug 2023}}</ref>

==="Aryan" ideology===
The use of the term "Aryan" in Nazi racial theories descends ultimately from an unscientific interpretation of the [[Proto-Indo-European]] linguistic hypothesis. The linguistic theory posits, based on extensive linguistic evidence, that many languages and cultures of Eurasia, including English, German, Latin, Greek, Persian, and Sanskrit, originate from one linguistic-cultural group who lived during the Bronze Age. In the 19th century, this was construed by racial theorists such as Arthur de Gobineau and Houston Stewart Chamberlain to mean that these groups had all originated with one conquering, superior ethnic group or "race". Given that the autonym ''"Arya"'' appears in both Sanskrit and Old Persian to refer to the descendants of this group, this name was assumed to be the original culture's true name. According to the Nazi version of this theory, white-skinned "Aryan" invaders subjugated the Dravidian-speaking natives of India and ruled them as the original Brahmin class, producing in the meantime outstanding works of Indian culture such as the Vedas, but eventually interbred with their dark-skinned inferiors and fell into obscurity.{{cn}}

In organizing, consider these questions for yourselves:
*What kinds of short-term gains can we realistically aim for to teach ourselves how to fight and win and grow our confidence?
*What about long-term goals?
*How do we achieve such?
*Setting up a fundraiser for strikers
*Sending a flood of false job applications to a company undergoing a strike
*Organizing and participating in rent/utilities/tax strikes. It's a good idea for these strikes to only take effect once a certain large amount of people have agreed to participate.
==Mutual aid==
For mutual aid organizing, identify the problems in your community that need addressing. Then find people interested in tackling those problems and figure out ways of getting those needs fulfilled. This is going to involve talking to a lot of people to find out what is going on, who is affected, and who can or wants to help. Call your local churches, community centers, shelters, etc. Services and goods that may be provided through mutual aid groups include those pertaining to:
*Child care
*Food security
*Transportation
*Literacy skills
*Translation
*Medical/dental/vision care
*Depression and suicide
*Drug use and rehabilitation
*Physical, mental, or sexual abuse
*Prisoner rehabilitation
*Legal advice
*Fire control
*Neighborhood security

==Workplace==
===Trade unions===
A trade union is an association of workers which legally represents and bargains for employees of a certain organization. In a capitalist society, it's important to be in one, especially if your company is particularly exploitative. Unions can help with job protection, working conditions, work safety, scheduling and work times, and preventing wage cuts; with the dues paid often providing a return much more than the upfront cost. Before joining a union, research it and ask its older members especially to see if it's worth joining and paying dues.

Once you're in a union, you'll meet other people in the same industry, and you'll get training in organizing if you want. Let the pros teach you, especially about situations and rules specific to your jurisdiction. Branch meetings are closed to the public, so your bosses are not going to know you're in the union unless they hear you say so.

The general process for unionizing your workplace is:
#Join the union best suited for you by trade with enough members to help you, the more radical the better. If you're part of a radical union, you will see strikes and the whole point of a strike is to not let strike breakers in. The police may come down hard on you when you barricade outside the workplace — your task is to keep the strike going, or else you'll just get fired and someone else will take your job for a lower wage.
#Talk to people about problems in the workplace so you can build a list of complaints and help mobilize people when 3 happens
#Wait for an opportunity where the company messes up, such as everyone getting the payroll late
#Ensure people unionize
#Set amongst yourselves a secret red line, like a wage cut. If your boss crosses it, threaten them of action by the union (oftentimes union representatives or lawyers will do this instead).

Joining a union may be risky, as it is in many places in the [[United States]], where often attempts to do so can get you and your coworkers fired. On the other hand, joining a union reduces risk, as being in one increases your power of appeal in case you get fired; or, being in a union can prevent you from getting fired in the first place.

===Understand your rights===
Some managers flagrantly violate the law with certain practices, hoping employees will be intimidated, not know better, or not bother to act. However even in places with questionable labor laws like the United States, those practices may be illegal and the law will thusly be enforced if brought up to the relevant authorities and especially with evidence. Get photos, record statements, and ask for your manager to confirm policies through email — most but not all US states allow for the legal collection of such evidence if at least one person (you) consents to it. Thus the approval of the manager is not needed, and in this it would likely be best if you record in secret. Otherwise, you will have to ask for permission to record a conversation, which lowers your odds of receiving a candid response, or you may have to do without such evidence altogether in the report.<ref>[https://www.criminaldefenselawyer.com/resources/criminal-defense/felony-offense/can-i-record-a-conversation-between-myself-anothe Can I legally record a conversation between myself and another person?]. CriminalDefenseLawyer.com</ref>
Familiarize yourself with your own national and state labor laws. Here are some of the main things to know, although valid only in some jurisdictions:
*Employees have a right to discuss their wages.<ref>[https://www.nlrb.gov/about-nlrb/rights-we-protect/your-rights/your-rights-to-discuss-wages Your Right to Discuss Wages]. National Labor Relations Board.</ref> If management tells you otherwise, report such statements/notices to your state's Department of Labor.
*Mandatory meetings without pay are illegal.
*An employee cannot be fired for not showing up despite having a doctor's note. Most US states don't have sick leave laws however, although if the employee has a qualified FMLA or ADA protection/accommodation it's still a violation if they are fired; furthermore grounds for a lawsuit.
*Water should be free and available at any job site; otherwise it is an OSHA violation.
*It's a big health code violation to tell sick employees to report for work even if they have symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, or nausea. Report this to the Health Department.
*Withholding earned pay is generally illegal.
*Off-the-clock work without pay is generally illegal, common examples including preparing for work, cleaning up, waiting, assisting coworkers, or undergoing training outside of clocked hours.
*It is widely unlawful to be hired at one rate and be paid at another. File a wage theft complaint if the promised rate is documented, and consider leaving a negative review of the company commensurate to your experience.
*Dress codes that restrict pro-union apparel are likely illegal. In the US, the National Labor Relations Board has decided so in August 2022.
*Employers are generally forbidden from requiring employees to buy personal protective equipment; they can only request.

In the US there is a general right to a workplace "free from recognized hazards" ([https://www.osha.gov/laws-regs Link to OSHA's regulations]), however [https://www.osha.gov/stateplans/statestandards some states have more rigorous rules].

Keep in mind that in the US at least, you cannot get unemployment benefits if you quit; only if you are fired. If you have a dispute with management and they tell you, for example, to not bother showing up, ask if that means you are fired to get it clear for this purpose.

==Political parties==
In case a trade union is too risky, joining a party may be a better option. You can contact other unions/parties on advice as to how exactly go about this; preferably ones within your locale. You can also contact the [[IWW]] as well. Talk to coworkers about labor issues; see who may be open to organizing. Keep things on the down-low until you develop an inner circle of people you trust, and then build a large enough body of workers ready to establish and commit to a union. Start by having meetings secretly until you are prepared enough to take action. Require or at least encourage members to actually read about economics or history so they understand what they are doing.

In general, you should seek out what the local leftist movements in your area are doing. They can be mass organizations or full political parties. Seek out one which best represents your ideological line, or which is the most advantageous to work with, even if they are not explicitly communist. In cases where there is little to no established leftist movement, your task should be to create one.

Consider a mayoral campaign, either running yourself or supporting someone. Mayors can do things like support those seeking to unionize or use municipal funds to expand farming coops on the outskirts of the city.

==List of organizations==
===International===
*World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU)
*Industrial Workers of the World (IWW)
*AFL-CIO: avoid this one, as it is notoriously corrupt and liberal. It purged its communists in the postwar era of McCarthyism and is nowadays notorious for its support of police unions, some of which are complicit in covering up the brutalities of its members. Quite a lot of funds it receives, rather than going to underpaid organizers, are pocketed by its leadership. The AFL-CIO also spends a lot of money and effort on furthering liberal political agendas, including on the international stage where it has been a long-time and strong opponent of communist unions in Latin America and Europe, helping for example to create the anti-communist union Force Ouvrière in France; a splinter off the historically left-wing General Confederation of Labour.<ref>''American Labor's Global Ambassadors: The International History of the AFL-CIO During the Cold War''. *[https://iwgb.org.uk Independent Workers Union of Great Britain]: If you are not in one of the industries covered by the various sections of the IWGB, you can join the "holding branch".

==Best practices==
For mutual aid organizing, identify the problems in your community that need addressing. Then find people interested in tackling those problems and figure out ways of getting those needs fulfilled. This is going to involve talking to a lot of people to find out what is going on, who is affected, and who can or wants to help. Call your local churches, community centers, shelters, etc. Services and goods that may be provided through mutual aid groups include those pertaining to:
*Child care
*Food security
*Transportation
*Literacy skills
*Translation
*Medical/dental/vision care
*Depression and suicide
*Drug use and rehabilitation
*Physical, mental, or sexual abuse
*Prisoner rehabilitation
*Legal advice
*Fire control
*Neighborhood security

==Workplace==
===Trade unions===

===Understand your rights===

==Political parties==

In the United States, the most real options are the [[Communist Party USA]] or the [[Party for Socialism and Liberation]].{{Slanted}} There is also the [[American Party of Labor]], and alternatively, you can go join the [[Green Party of the United States]], which is officially anti-capitalist as of 2016 and has had a large socialist faction since its founding in the 1980s. Figures like Michael Hudson, however, believe that the US Greens are not a genuine leftist party,<ref>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RG2p_Iibpr8</ref> although it may also be said that criticisms like those made by Hudson are projections of personal experience with neoliberal Greens in other countries, dispelling the notion of some kind of "international Green solidarity". Furthermore, US Greens are considerably more radical than most other countries' because they have to fight so hard just to get ballot access. In some countries, the Green party is just a front for another party — often in these cases, both are completely corrupt. In these situations their only purpose is to siphon votes and appeal to ecologists, so a more explicitly socialist party would be better in that case.

Consider a mayoral campaign, either running yourself or supporting someone. Mayors can do things like support those seeking to unionize or use municipal funds to expand farming coops on the outskirts of the city.

==List of organizations==
===International===
*World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU)
*AFL-CIO: avoid this one, as it is notoriously corrupt and liberal. It purged its communists in the postwar era of McCarthyism and is nowadays notorious for its support of police unions, some of which are complicit in covering up the brutalities of its members. *Organizing and participating in rent/utilities/tax strikes. It's a good idea for these strikes to only take effect once a certain large amount of people have agreed to participate. These can even be used to reverse government policy as has happened with the abolition of the Poll Tax in the UK in the early 1990s, although not paying bills in certain cases in unfeasible for factors individual to the circumstances.
*Donating to organizations such as the Communist Party USA, Freedom Road Socialist Organization, Party for Socialism and Liberation, or the American Party of Labor
*Buying billboards and Internet ads
*[[Protesting]], for example for better water or road infrastructure, against war, or [https://bdsmovement.net for boycotting, divesting from, and sanctioning unjust and imperialist regimes]

==Mutual aid==
For mutual aid organizing, identify the problems in your community that need addressing. Then find people interested in tackling those problems and figure out ways of getting those needs fulfilled. This is going to involve talking to a lot of people to find out what is going on, who is affected, and who can or wants to help. Call your local churches, community centers, shelters, etc. Services and goods that may be provided through mutual aid groups include those pertaining to:
*Child care
*Food security
*Transportation
*Literacy skills
*Translation
*Medical/dental/vision care
*Depression and suicide
*Drug use and rehabilitation
*Physical, mental, or sexual abuse
*Prisoner rehabilitation
*Legal advice
*Fire control
*Neighborhood security

==Workplace==
===Trade unions===

===Understand your rights===

==Political parties==

In the United States, the most real options are the [[Communist Party USA]] or the [[Party for Socialism and Liberation]]. There is also the [[American Party of Labor]], and alternatively, you can go join the [[Green Party of the United States]], which is officially anti-capitalist as of 2016 and has had a large socialist faction since its founding in the 1980s.

==List of organizations==
===International===
'''Nationalism''' refers to often [[right-wing]] ideologies and movements that promote the interests of a particular [[nation]]. There are numerous forms of Nationalism. Nationalism is sometimes confused with [[patriotism]], as often, especially in the [[United States of America]], patriotism can easily blur into nationalism.

Leftists often stand in [[anti-nationalism|opposition to nationalism]]. There are a number of reasons for this. Nationalism is always founded on a shaky narrative of history, where contradictions within a cultural group are erased in favour of a mythologized common identity. Next to this, nationalism will be used to distract oppressed populations into attacking external enemies rather than their immediate oppressors.

Despite this there are nationalist movements that get supported by many leftists, depending on the interests involved in them. Some nationalisms, for instance, try to break away from imperialist powers and bring sovereignty to previously oppressed people. (such as [[Irish nationalism]], [[Scottish nationalism]] and many [[post-colonialism|post-colonial]] struggles). Leftist support for these movements is generally based on the principle of national [[self determination]].

It is a mistake to see leftist [[internationalism]] as simple anti-nationalism. Rather than negate authentic national identity, internationalists want to see a solidarity among different nations, empowering all of them.
'''Races''' are categories based on physical characteristics. However, race is not a scientific useful category:

<blockquote>"The fact that, given enough genetic data, individuals can be correctly assigned to their populations of origin is compatible with the observation that most human genetic variation is found within populations, not between them. It is also compatible with our finding that, even when the most distinct populations are considered and hundreds of loci are used, individuals are frequently more similar to members of other populations than to members of their own population. Thus, caution should be used when using geographic or genetic ancestry to make inferences about individual phenotypes."<ref>https://www.genetics.org/content/176/1/351</ref></blockquote>

Race however, is relevant to sociology, etc., insofar as it has a measurable effect on the treatment of individuals due to their "race" (that can be either negative or positive, as for example, in the case of [[white privilege]]).

==Race as a social construct==

Understanding that race is not scientifically important (or at least not more important than say, eye color) theorists in [[critical theory]], [[Post-colonialism|post-colonial studies]], and basically every relevant left-wing movement in the last century have advanced the theory that race is a social construct. This means that race is not an atavistic attitude, but rather an attachment of certain attributes to a certain racial category, in a way that has nothing to do with reality. In this sense, race can be analyzed as an [[ideology]] (i.e., an imagined relation to real conditions of existence, basically, an untrue idea that is implanted through socialization). For example, black people in the U.S. were racialized as slaves, such that to be black meant to be a slave. This of course, is untrue, but it does not matter that race is irrelevant to being a slave inherently, only that people thought this was true (i.e., it is imagined).

[[File:Anonymous - Prise de la Bastille.jpg|right|thumb|Storming of the Bastille, an opening event of the [[French Revolution]], commonly cited as an example of a bourgeois revolution.]]
A '''bourgeois revolution''', or '''bourgeois democratic revolution''', is a term used by [[Marxism|Marxists]] to denote a [[social revolution]] carried out by the [[bourgeoisie]] to overthrow the [[feudalism|feudal]] mode of production and realize the [[dictatorship of the bourgeoisie]] and [[capitalism]].

<blockquote>"The bourgeoisie, historically, has played a most revolutionary part.<br><br>

The bourgeoisie, wherever it has got the upper hand, has put an end to all feudal, patriarchal, idyllic relations. It has pitilessly torn asunder the motley feudal ties that bound man to his “natural superiors”, and has left remaining no other nexus between man and man than naked self-interest, than callous “cash payment”. It has drowned the most heavenly ecstasies of religious fervour, of chivalrous enthusiasm, of philistine sentimentalism, in the icy water of egotistical calculation. It has resolved personal worth into exchange value, and in place of the numberless indefeasible chartered freedoms, has set up that single, unconscionable freedom — Free Trade. In one word, for exploitation, veiled by religious and political illusions, it has substituted naked, shameless, direct, brutal exploitation." —[[Karl Marx]] and [[Friedrich Engels]], ''[[Manifesto of the Communist Party]]'', Ch. I, "Bourgeois and Proletarians"</blockquote>

==Differences from socialist revolutions==
According to [[Joseph Stalin]], bourgeois revolutions diverge from [[Socialist revolution|proletarian revolutions]] in several key ways, including in how bourgeois revolutions assume control of more-or-less ready-made [[state]] machinery, bourgeois revolutions being concluded at the seizure of power rather than it being just the ''beginning'' in the case of their socialist counterparts, bourgeois revolutions merely replacing one group of exploiters with another, and other divergences.<ref>Joseph Stalin (1926). This argument quickly falls apart upon closer examination. To refer to ''[[the Communist Manifesto]]'':
<blockquote>"It has been objected that upon the abolition of private property, all work will cease, and universal laziness will overtake us.<br><br>

According to this, bourgeois society ought long ago to have gone to the dogs through sheer idleness; for those of its members who work, acquire nothing, and those who acquire anything do not work.
'''State capitalism''', in the most common sense, is the formation of [[capitalism]] which involves the total subordination of the [[state]] apparatus to private [[Monopoly|monopolies]] and their complete domination in the political, economic, and social life of a country. [[Vladimir Lenin]] used the term to refer to the form of nascent state-operated capitalism which started to develop in the [[Russian Soviet Republic]] in works such as ''[[The Tax in Kind]]''.<ref>Vladimir Lenin (1921). The term "state capitalism" is often used by [[Leftism|leftists]] to refer to nominally [[Socialist state|socialist states]] which have what is in fact capitalism as their mode of production. {{Marxism sidebar}}The '''revolutionary dictatorship of the proletariat''' ('''DOTP''') is a [[Marxist]] concept which describes a temporary [[state]] form constructed in the [[Socialist transition|transition period]] of social reconstruction which is effected by a [[socialist revolution]]. The DOTP is necessary for the socialization of the [[means of production]] and the implementation of large-scale [[economic planning]].<ref>It "gives [the] socialized character [of production the] complete freedom to work itself out. Socialized production upon a [[economic planning|predetermined plan]] becomes henceforth possible". Engels. Socialism: Utopian and Scientific. Chapter III - Historical Materialism</ref> Proponents claim this amounts to a transition from the [[capitalism|capitalist]] to the [[communism|communist]] [[mode of production]].

== Etymology and meaning ==
The use of the term ''dictatorship'' is a source of disagreement among some readers of Marx. Some Marxists{{cn}} argue that every [[class society]] is at base a dictatorship of the [[ruling class]] under which [[legal]] and social organization is only a tool for mediating social conflict. [[Capitalist society]] is itself a [[dictatorship of the bourgeoisie]], in which the ruling classes regularly abuse their own legal precedents and commit crimes which are never held accountable precisely ''because'' of the importance of this extralegal suppression in maintaining the unstable class structure. Indeed, by carrying out the [[bourgeois revolution]]s, the revolutionary [[bourgeois]] class suspended the [[feudal]] ruling class's capricious abuse of the spirit of the law, especially as represented by the impudent laws of kings Charles I of England and Louis XVI of France. In this sense, every class system is a form of extralegal oppression, and this system must be forcibly replaced with a democratic one:
{{quote|A revolution is certainly the most authoritarian thing there is; it is the act whereby one part of the population imposes its will upon the other part by means of rifles, bayonets and cannon — authoritarian means, if such there be at all; and if the victorious party does not want to have fought in vain, it must maintain this rule by means of the terror which its arms inspire in the reactionists.|Engels|On Authority<ref>[https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1872/10/authority.htm On Authority], by Engels, Friedrich, 1872.</ref>}}

Marx and Engels were both perfectly clear that the dictatorship of the proletariat had to have a democratic character achieved through universal suffrage in combination with the suppression of the undemocratic power relations inherent in inequalities of land and income. Discussion of the details of this political system typically draws on the example of the [[Paris Commune]], which Engels himself highlighted: {{quote|Well and good, gentlemen, do you want to know what this dictatorship looks like? Look at the Paris Commune. That was the Dictatorship of the Proletariat.|Engels|{{cn}}}} It is for this reason that [[Lenin]] and other [[Marxist]]s define equality of pay for elected representatives and the right of recall (both of them policies of the Commune) as essential to the political form of the DOTP. However, critics such as [[Paul Cockshott]] argue that this is a deficient and outdated position which does not take into account the lessons to be learned from places, including not only the Commune and the USSR but the [[United States]] and the [[PRC]], where these policies have already been implemented.{{cn}}

During the [[French Revolution]], the idea of a temporary, revolutionary dictatorship became a part of the program of the [[Jacobins]] and "[[Conspiracy of Equals]]." However, their conceptions of dictatorship differed from that of Marx's, in that instead of advocating a direct dictatorship of the people, they advocated a dictatorship of the people's interests. The Jacobins established a fanatical revolutionary regime and initiated the infamous "[[Reign of Terror]]," with the intent of purging the country of all [[counter-revolution]]aries and foreign agents. Following the overthrow of the Jacobins, a new society advocating revolutionary dictatorship emerged, the aforementioned "Conspiracy of Equals." While not using the term "dictatorship," their programs made clear that they advocated a closed dictatorship of revolutionaries. Yet their motives for such a dictatorship were not so much in paranoia as the Jacobins, but in concern for the masses, whom they feared were too conservative and unenlightened for revolutionary purposes. Their platform promised the eventual establishment of a democratic republic, but only once the preceding dictatorial government recognized them as "enlightened."

While Marx and Engels admired their dedication to the proletariat, they dismissed these notions of conspiratorial and exclusive organization. Marx formulated the dictatorship of the proletariat not as an emergency termination of democracy but as the extension of the democracy of the previous regime:

{{quote|One thing that is absolutely certain is that our party and the working class cannot achieve rule except under the form of the democratic republic. This latter is even the specific form of the dictatorship of the proletariat, as the Great French Revolution already showed.|Engels{{Cn}}}}

===Hal Draper===
The Marxist [[Hal Draper]] produces a similar analysis which differs on important points. Marx used the term ''dictatorship'' in its original sense as used in [[Roman]] law. In the [[Roman Republic]], the dictator (“one who dictates”), was an extraordinary magistrate (''magistrātus extrāōrdinārius'') with the absolute authority to perform tasks beyond the authority of the ordinary magistrate (''magistrātus ōrdinārius''). The office of dictator was a legal innovation originally named ''Magister Populī'' ("Master of the People"), i.e., Master of the Citizen Army. The "dictator" possessed these powers only for the duration of the civil insurrection that he was meant to crush. The word ''dictatorship'' in the sense that Marx used it in inherently conveyed the meaning of temporary powers.<ref>Hal Draper, 1987. The 'Dictatorship of the Proletariat' in Marx and Engels</ref> Hence, Marx speaks of a "dictatorship of the bourgeoisie" only by specifically referencing Cavaignac: "he was the dictatorship of the bourgeoisie".{{Cn}} Cavaignac crushed a workers' uprising and relinquished power after he had done so, consistent with the use of dictatorship in that time period. The term 'dictatorship' does therefore not convey oppression or subjugation as is sometimes argued, and Draper argues on this basis{{cn}} that the dictatorship of the proletariat (a sort of temporary emergency measure) cannot be equated with general bourgeois class rule (indefinite). According to Draper, only later did Marxists such as [[Lenin]] come to use it generally, referring to all bourgeois class rule as a [[dictatorship of the bourgeoisie]].

The dictatorship of the proletariat is also referred to as the '''revolutionary dictatorship''', or '''proletarian dictatorship'''. It can also be referred to by other names depending on the political form equated with the dictatorship of the proletariat, such as a "workers' [[republic]]" or "[[workers' state]]".

== Party ==

Some [[orthodox Marxism|orthodox Marxists]] have argued that the dictatorship of the proletariat may be intra-party organs within a mass party-movement of the majority of the working class.

[[Amadeo Bordiga]] considers the [[Communist Party]] the organic unity of the proletariat. The dictatorship of the proletariat is therefore the dictatorship of the communist party. The Party would assume power and as the state withers away the Party would be transformed into a central administration that would be responsible for decision-making on the basis of the scientific method. Neither the Party nor the central administration would be subject to democratic control arguing that majority decision-making does not make it the correct decision. The correctness of decisions would be established on the basis of science.<ref>John CRUMP. Non-market socialism in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
== Withering away of the state ==

The [[withering away of the state]] was first used by Friedrich Engels in [[Anti-Dühring]]: "State interference in social relations becomes, in one domain after another, superfluous, and then dies out of itself; the government of persons is replaced by the administration of things, and by the conduct of processes of production. The state is not "abolished". It dies out [It withers away]."<ref>Engels, F. (1877). Anti-Dühring. https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1877/anti-duhring/ch24.htm</ref>

The state originated from [[class society]] and class antagonisms. The revolutionary dictatorship is the body of class rule against the bourgeoisie and its [[reaction]]. The withering away of the state occurs because of the disappearance of class antagonisms and the abolition of social classes. The revolutionary dictatorship uses coercion against the reaction to consolidate its power, as the reaction is beaten these types of coercive functions of the workers' state gradually disappear proportionally to the intensity of the reaction (as the reaction dwindles, so does the coercion employed). The working class organs of the revolutionary dictatorship are organically transformed into administrative organs of [[free association]] of equal individuals. The state disappears not because of a voluntary abdication of power by the ruling class but because the specific organs for class rule are transformed into organs of voluntary association around [[common ownership]].
Chapter III - Historical Materialism</ref> Dictators claim this amounts to a transition from the [[capitalism|capitalist]] to the [[communism|communist]] [[mode of production]].

== Etymology and meaning ==
{{quote|A revolution is certainly the most authoritarian thing there is; it is the act whereby one part of the population imposes its will upon the other part by means of rifles, bayonets and cannon — authoritarian means, if such there be at all; and if the victorious party does not want to have fought in vain, it must maintain this rule by means of the terror which its arms inspire in the reactionists.|Engels|On Authority<ref>[https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1872/10/authority.htm On Authority], by Engels, Friedrich, 1872.</ref>}}

Marx and Engels were both perfectly clear that the dictatorship of the proletariat had to have a democratic character achieved through universal suffrage in combination with the suppression of the undemocratic power relations inherent in inequalities of land and income. Discussion of the details of this political system typically draws on the example of the [[Paris Commune]], which Engels himself highlighted: {{quote|Well and good, gentlemen, do you want to know what this dictatorship looks like? Look at the Paris Commune. That was the Dictatorship of the Proletariat.|Engels|{{cn}}}} It is for this reason that [[Lenin]] and other [[Marxist]]s define equality of pay for elected representatives and the right of recall (both of them policies of the Commune) as essential to the political form of the DOTP. However, critics such as [[Paul Cockshott]] argue that this is a deficient and outdated position which does not take into account the lessons to be learned from places, including not only the Commune and the USSR but the [[United States]] and the [[PRC]], where these policies have already been implemented.{{cn}}

{{quote|One thing that is absolutely certain is that our party and the working class cannot achieve rule except under the form of the democratic republic. This latter is even the specific form of the dictatorship of the proletariat, as the Great French Revolution already showed.|Engels{{Cn}}}}

===Hal Draper===

== Party ==

Described by its adherents as a "third stage" of [[Marxism]], it incorporates theories such as [[protracted people's war]], [[New Democracy]], [[cultural revolution]], etc. to form a "qualitative leap" in Marxist theory.<ref>[https://tjen-folket.no/2019/08/14/why-maoism-what-is-maoism/ "Why Maoism — What is Maoism?"] (August 19, 2019). ''Tjen Folket Media''. Retrieved May 1, 2026.</ref> While traditional [[Marxism–Leninism]] focused primarily on the industrial [[proletariat]] as the leading revolutionary class, Marxism–Leninism–Maoism, drawing heavily from Mao's experiences in [[China]], recognizes the poor [[peasantry]] as the main engine of [[Revolution|revolutionary]] change in pre-industrial, semi-[[colonial]], and semi-[[feudal]] societies. There are internal disagreements in Maoism, with some favoring the line of the [[Communist Party of the Philippines]] while others siding with the [[Shining Path|Communist Party of Peru (Shining Path)]], the latter grouping are known as [[Gonzalo Thought|"Gonzaloists"]].

Maoism has been criticized by most Marxist–Leninists for failing to meaningfully advance revolutionary theory and applying a [[Dogmatism|dogmatic]] outlook. [[Hoxhaism|''Hoxhaists'']] in particular view MLM as being an extension of the [[revisionism]] of [[Mao Zedong Thought]] which [[Enver Hoxha]] sharply criticized during the [[Sino-Albanian split]].
==History==
{{Maoism sidebar}}
===Origins===
Marxism–Leninism–Maoism has its origins in [[Mao Zedong Thought]]. While initially believed to only be applicable to Chinese conditions, Mao Zedong Thought was recognized at the 9th congress of the Communist Party of China in 1969 as having a universal scope and representing a new stage in Marxism.<ref>[https://www.marxists.org/subject/china/documents/cpc/9th_congress_report.htm REPORT TO THE NINTH NATIONAL CONGRESS OF THE COMMUNIST PARTY OF CHINA] (1969). Available on the Marxists Internet Archive.</ref>

===Development===
Maoism as Marxism–Leninism–Maoism was recognized by the Communist Party of Peru (Shining Path) in the 1980s as being the most advanced form of Marxism. In 1988, the writing ''On Marxism–Leninism–Maoism'' was released by the PCP-SL which provided a basis for the universal theory.<ref>[https://www.bannedthought.net/Peru/CPP/Documents/GeneralPoliticalLineOfTheCommunistPartyOfPeru-1988-OCR.pdf ''General Political Line of the Communist Party of Peru''], pp. 3-13, "On Marxism–Leninism–Maoism". Central Committee of the Communist Party of Peru. Available on bannedthought.net.</ref> In the 1980s, during the [[communist insurgency in Peru]], increased unity between Maoist parties and other formations resulted in the formation of the [[Revolutionary Internationalist Movement]], composed of Maoist parties globally.

==Theory==
Maoism claims to adopt and expand upon the theory of [[Marxism–Leninism]], but also includes a sizable corpus of its own theory.
=== Anti-revisionism===
{{Main|Anti-revisionism}}
Maoists uphold anti-revisionism as a foundational tenant of their ideology, believing revisionism to be the primary cause of degradation in the international communist movement and behind the [[dissolution of the Soviet Union]].

<blockquote>"Revisionism obviously is a cancer, a cancer that has to be ruthlessly eliminated. Otherwise we won’t be able to advance the revolution. Remembering what Lenin said, in a concise way, we must forge ahead on two questions, the question of revolutionary violence, and the relentless struggle against opportunism, against revisionism." —Chairman Gonzalo, Interview with Chairman Gonzalo</blockquote>

===Necessity of people's war ===
{{Main|Protracted people's war}}
Maoists uphold protracted people's war as being applicable to countries outside of China. The extent to which it is universal is disputed by Maoists, with some (particularly Gonzaloists) regarding it as universal and the ''sole'' means of revolution, even in the industrial countries.
===Mass line ===
The "mass line" is the Maoist theory of the communist party interacting with the masses. With the mass line, the Maoist communist party hears the grievances of the masses and answers them with communist solutions.

<blockquote>"Take the ideas of the masses and concentrate them, then go to the masses, persevere in the ideas and carry them through, so as to form correct ideas of leadership - such is the basic method of leadership." —Mao Zedong, Some Questions Concerning Methods of Leadership</blockquote>

=== Bureaucrat capitalism ===
{{Main|Bureaucrat capitalism}}
"Bureaucrat capitalism" is the Maoist concept of the economic system established in [[Imperialism|imperialized]] countries. With bureaucrat capitalism, the local [[Feudalism|feudal]] strata combine with the comprador bourgeoisie to establish an exploitative system for the benefit of the imperialist bourgeoisie.

===Cultural revolution===
{{Main|Cultural revolution}}
Maoists generally uphold the [[Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution]] in China and believe that cultural revolutions are needed in order to prevent the formation of a "bourgeois headquarters" in the communist party.

==="Social-imperialism" as a returning threat===
{{Main|Social-imperialism}}
Maoists maintain that the Soviet Union after around 1956 became "social-imperialist," and believe that China developed a social-imperialist system around 1978. Maoists view social-imperialism as one of the main forms of imperialism in the modern day and a threat to the communist movement.
===Unity-struggle-unity and two-line struggle===
Maoists believe that the party process operates on the basis of "unity, struggle, unity." This means that an ideological struggle takes place within the party on the basis of "one divides into two," and through proper two-line struggle, unity is restored and the rightist line is combated.

<blockquote>"This democratic method of resolving contradictions among the people was epitomized in 1942 in the formula 'unity, criticism, unity'. To elaborate, it means starting from the desire for unity, resolving contradictions through criticism or struggle and arriving at a new unity on a new basis. In our experience this is the correct method of resolving contradictions among the people." —Mao Zedong, On the Correct Handling of Contradictions Among the People</blockquote>
