8chan is an anonymous imageboard site known for formerly hosting /leftypol/. The site was created by American software developer Frederick "Hotwheels" Brennan in October 2013 due to what he viewed a suppression of free speech on 4chan. Brennan headed the site until 2016 when he's tired of the increase amount of alt-right rhetoric which had spread on the site. Brennan's political views have historically been right-libertarian; however, his views have shifted since his break with the site. Since then, the site had been headed by Jim Watkins. It was taken down in 2019 after an alt-right spree killer posted his manifesto. It was brought back as 8kun.

Formerly home to a number of leftist boards:

  • /leftypol/ — the most active leftist board on the site.
  • /leftpol/ — a spin-off board created due to a dispute over moderation on /leftypol/.
  • /marx/ — a Marxist-Leninist-aligned board intended to have a 'higher tone' and more educational content.
  • /libcom/

Its main successors:

  • Bunkerchan — the successor board to /leftypol/.
  • Leftypol — an alternate board which is intended to have looser moderation policies.
