Chairman Gonzalo (3 December 1934−11 September 2021, Spanish: Presidente Gonzalo), born Manuel Rubén Abimael Guzmán Reinoso, was a Peruvian communist revolutionary and politician who served as Chairman of the Communist Party of Peru — Shining Path between 1969 until his capture by state authorities in 1992.[1]
Gonzalo is upheld by many Maoists as a foundational theorist for his role in defining Marxism–Leninism–Maoism as a universal doctrine,[2] as well as creating its application to Peruvian conditions, Gonzalo Thought.[3] However, among other leftists, he is widely criticized on the grounds of sectarianism, terrorism, and the development of a cult of personality.
