The People's Republic of China[a] (PRC), commonly known as China,[b] is a country in East Asia. It is one of the world's largest countries in terms of geographical size, population, and economic power. It is ruled largely by the Communist Party of China.

The People's Republic of China was formed on October 1, 1949 after the victory of the CPC in a civil war against the Nationalists. It was based on New Democracy and operated as a People's Democratic Dictatorship, an alliance of progressive classes under the leadership of the proletariat through the Communist Party. In 1976, a political campaign known as the Cultural Revolution was resolved when Mao died, allowing the reformist, liberalizing faction of the party led by Deng Xiaoping to eliminate Mao's remaining associates and initiate a program of economic liberalization. Since 1978, the People's Republic of China has developed what it terms socialism with Chinese characteristics, which includes the use of Special Economic Zones, state-owned enterprises, and foreign direct investment (FDI). The ruling party's political philosophy has become more eclectic since the 1980s, incorporating traditionalist and nationalist ideas, as well as innovations based on the ideas of Deng Xiaoping and his successors, into its nominally Marxist platform. Supporters of its economic model draw comparisons to the Bolsheviks' New Economic Policy of 1921-1928, arguing that China's industrial development since the 1980s has been a necessary step for the material development of the communist mode of production.

China, while formally proclaiming itself a socialist state since its modern inception in 1949, has been the subject of criticism from most of the left. Many socialists view China as a capitalist countries disguised as socialist, with some Marxists arguing that it represents a social-imperialist power in its own right competing with the West in an inter-imperialist rivalry.[1]
