Democratic socialism refers to a number of leftist ideologies that seek to establish socialism through participation in capitalist democracy, and/or stress the importance of democratic rights in the socialist society they want to establish. It is also used by the United States Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders to refer to his own ideological position, although he has made no indication that he supports the abolition of capitalism. The current New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani has also used the term to describe himself and his platform. He has said in past statements that he is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America.
