The People's Republic of China[a] (PRC), commonly known as China,[b] is a country in East Asia. It is one of the world's largest countries in terms of geographical size, population, and economic power. It is ruled largely by the Communist Party of China.

China, while formally proclaiming itself a socialist state since its modern inception in 1949 under Mao Zedong, has been the subject of criticism from most of the left. Many socialists view China as a capitalist countries disguised as socialist, with some Marxists arguing that it represents a social-imperialist power in its own right competing with the West in an inter-imperialist rivalry.[1]
