Joseph Stalin (né Dzhugashvili; 18 December [O.S. 6 December] 1878 – 5 March 1953) was a Soviet Bolshevik revolutionary and politician who was general secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (Bolsheviks) from 1922 to 1952 and as premier from 1941 until his death. He defined Marxism–Leninism into a coherent framework based off his understanding of the contributions of Vladimir Lenin, his predecessor.

Joseph Stalin remains controversial among the left. Marxist–Leninists uphold him as a great leader who defeated fascism in Europe and turned the USSR into a modern industrialized country which allegedly built socialism, whereas other ideological groupings like Trotskyists and left communists oppose him for allegedly betraying the October Revolution and degrading the Soviet Union into a bureaucratic dictatorship which was counter-revolutionary in nature.
