4chan is an English-language imageboard website founded in 2003 by Christopher Poole (known online as moot). The site was inspired by 2chan and Something Awful. It was created for English-language fans of Japanese media, especially anime & manga. 4chan rise in popularity due to its anonymity and trolling culture. The site was featured among mainstream news which the site was associated with one of it's board /b/, the random board dedicated to any topics, due to various memes, raids, and Project Chanology started on it.
The early 2010s were when tensions between the ruthless internet culture and the socially conscious internet culture were risen. Leading to the creation of the "politically incorrect" board /pol/, after news board /n/ was taken down due to the increase amount of ironic bigotry. in 2013, Some users migrate to the splinter board 8chan due to 4chan's restriction on discussions about Gamergate. Users on 8chan have historically referred to 4chan as Halfchan.
