Mao Zedong[a] (26 December 1893 – 9 September 1976) was a Chinese revolutionary, theorist, and politician who is considered the founder of the People's Republic of China. A self-proclaimed Marxist–Leninist, he led the Communist Party of China as its chairman from 1943 until his death in 1976 in a civil war against the reactionary Guomindang while also participating in the anti-Japanese resistance during World War II.
Mao Zedong is upheld by many communists for his contributions to theory, and is often considered a classic for this reason. The tendency he founded, Mao Zedong Thought, later Maoism, would gain worldwide adoption. However, he has been criticized by other tendencies such as libertarian socialism and left communism for supposedly being a bourgeois revolutionary and "Stalinist". Marxist–Leninists, like those who uphold Enver Hoxha, regard Mao Zedong as being progressive but ultimately deviating from the course of socialist construction and relegating China to capitalism.[1]
